Introduction
The Department offers graduate students the opportunity to study the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean and the Near East and explore the interconnected histories and cultures of these areas. It is expected that students will take a broad range of courses in these fields as they develop their programs of study in their major and allied subjects. Allied subjects are ancient languages (including Greek and Latin at Bryn Mawr and Sumerian, Akkadian, Ugaritic, and Hittite at the University of Pennsylvania), history of art, urban studies, ancient history, anthropology, or archaeological sciences related to the program of the student.
The department is part of The Graduate Group in Archaeology, Classics, and History of Art, bringing together faculty and students to encourage interdisciplinary study. While each department awards its own degrees, the Graduate Group creates a collaborative research environment and promotes a strong scholarly community among all of its graduate students.
