Introduction
The Master's program "Economics" is characterized by a mixture of basic and specialization courses. Talented students also have the opportunity to participate in doctoral courses and gain credit for excellent performance. Much more than in the bachelor's program, independent scientific work is what is required for master's students. The courses available offer numerous possibilities for integration with Business Administration, Law, and the master's programs in Philosophy & Economics and History & Economics. Despite the diversity of the courses offered, the aim remains to impart core competencies in the fields of institutional economics, international economic relations, and empirical economic research. Students will be able to structure and solve complex problems at a methodically high level.
Admissions
Curriculum
The courses are taught at a high academic level, most of them in English. Lecture and seminar materials are primarily in English. Students are familiarized with the reasoning and rigor of internationally recognized economic research. They learn to adequately comprehend and evaluate scientific economic discussions of the past, present, and future. Students are thus put in a position to act responsibly, recognizing the merits of and challenges to a free market-based, constitutional democratic state. They improve the ability to critically scrutinize and further develop models of purely economic as well as political economic interaction. The program can be studied with an interdisciplinary focus. Options exist to link with the University of Bayreuth’s master’s programs in Business Administration and Health Economics. Moreover, the program leaves room for individual interests outside of economics. This allows for breadth and depth of thought – an important prerequisite for developing sustainable solutions to complex economic and social problems.
Career Opportunities
Students enrolled in the master’s program in Economics at the University of Bayreuth receive a sound research-based education with a range of options to focus on personal scientific interests. This prepares them for either a practical or a scientific career. Typical employers include banks, insurance companies, other businesses, research institutes, public services, chambers of commerce, think tanks, NGOs, and international organizations. The master’s program also provides an excellent basis for continuing one's education with a doctoral program at the University of Bayreuth or elsewhere. Globalization, the intensified application of information and communication technology, and the rapid progress of other technological developments have increased the demand for employees with a high level of expertise in economics. The master’s program in Economics at the University of Bayreuth is an excellent opportunity to achieve that level of expertise.
Doing a doctorate at the University of Bayreuth
The University of Bayreuth Graduate School supervises doctoral students of all subjects who are pursuing a doctorate in a structured program or at one of the University's seven faculties. We facilitate scientific exchange already in the earliest phase of independent research and complement the interdisciplinary education of doctoral students with additional teaching and training opportunities. Our aim is to create the perfect research and learning conditions for them.
