Introduction
The Master's part of the Photonics Program belongs to the Graduate Program for Photonics, which is intended for students who pursue a Master's program that prepares for and is coherent with a subsequent PhD project that is carried out in the COBRA Research Institute Students can enroll at the master level through the master Applied Physics (AP) or Electrical Engineering (EE), and as such obtain all qualifications, competences, and recognitions of these Masters. They obtain a proven record of knowledge of and experience in a multidisciplinary area at the interface of Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics.
To prepare for an informed decision for a subsequent PhD project in one of the Photonics groups, the student will, during the Master phase, acquire a broad view of the scope of the Research in Photonics at the COBRA Research Institute. Students obtain maximum influence on their PhD project, which may include the writing of their own research proposal.
NVAO accreditation
The Master’s part of the Photonics program is formally a track of the Master’s program Electrical Engineering resp. Master's program Applied Physics. Both Master’s programs are accredited by NVAO (Nederlands-Vlaamse Accreditatieorganisatie), the Accreditation Organization of the Netherlands, and Flanders.
Curriculum
Photonics: a multidisciplinary program
The Master's part of the Photonics program is fully embedded in either of the two regular Master's programs Applied Physics (AP), track Nanoscience & Technology (NANO) or Electrical Engineering (EE), track Broadband Telecommunication Technologies (BTT). Both masters are nominally two-year programs, corresponding to 120 Credit Points (CPs) in the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) units. About 20% of the program consists of basic introductory courses, differing somewhat dependent on the chosen entry. Another 20% is reserved for elective courses, to be chosen from an extensive list. The largest part, about 60%, consists of research projects, carried out during several internships within and outside the university. The COBRA Research Institute provides a Certificate to students who successfully completed this Master's part of the Photonics Program.
