The primary objective of our Clinical Psychology master’s specialisation is to equip students with a strong theoretical foundation and essential skills for conducting clinical psychology research, assessments, and interventions. This programme focuses on imparting knowledge and expertise essential for evaluating, diagnosing, and treating various forms of psychopathology in adult populations.
The study programme in a nutshell
Unlock the complexities of human behaviour with our Clinical Psychology master’s specialisation, focusing on adult psychopathology research and interventions.
What does this study entail?
- An intensive programme with an emphasis on evidence-based clinical psychology.
- Designed for problem-solving, where you collaborate in small groups to address clinical psychological challenges.
- Provides excellent preparation for careers in mental health, education, or scientific research.
- Instruction is in English.
This master's track focuses on adult psychopathology, approached through the lens of scientific psychology. In this programme, we explore the more complex forms of psychopathology as often seen within urban settings. Located in the vibrant city of Rotterdam, our urban environment often serves as the backdrop for our research, including the study of challenges such as addiction and personality disorders.
Throughout the theoretical courses in this master's programme, we delve into the research methods used in clinical psychology to study psychopathology, its causes, and treatment options. This theoretical and methodological knowledge is nurtured in a dynamic learning environment.
Additionally, the programme includes two types of practical skills training (note: you can only choose one):
Option 1: Clinical skills training. This option teaches fundamental therapeutic skills, including couple therapy and behavioural-cognitive assessment and treatment techniques.
Option 2: Practical research skills training. Here, you'll learn to address questions related to brain functioning and cognitive-emotional processes. These practical groups involve lab training and assignments, and you'll collaborate with students from the "Brain & Cognition" master track.
Curriculum
The study program in a nutshell
The Clinical Psychology master's program is organized into a series of course periods; each of these periods comprises both a theoretical block (of course) and a practical one. Within each block or practical, all activities—such as lectures, tutorials, and assignments—align with the chosen theme.
In terms of practicals, the Clinical Psychology master's track offers two distinct tracks: the 'Research training track' and the 'Clinical training track.' You must select one of these tracks; it's important to note that choosing both is not an option. Please indicate your preference when applying for the master. The admission criteria are the same for both tracks.
If your career goal involves working in mental healthcare post-graduation, we advise you to choose the ‘Clinical training track’. If you envision a different career path or you aspire to pursue a Ph.D. position, the ‘Research training track’ might be your best option.
Similarities & differences
Blocks 1-4 are the same for both tracks, as is practical 4. In addition, both tracks require students to complete a master's thesis during the second half of the academic year (mandatory). Practical training 1-3 are related to either the research training track or the clinical training track. In addition, students in the clinical track also have the option to complete a practical internship, if they so choose
Note: The track you have chosen will not be registered as such on your degree. After successfully concluding the program, you will obtain a Master of Science degree in Psychology, specialization in Clinical Psychology. The degree includes a list of the specific blocks and practical training you have followed and the grades you have obtained.
The curricula are subject to change. No rights may be derived from this information (including the information via the links). In order to graduate, all students need to write a master's thesis on the basis of a research internship. In addition, students may choose to do an external practical internship. Practical internships are not obligatory and may be hard to find for students in the specialization of Clinical Psychology who do not speak Dutch.

Interested in practicing Psychology internationally?
It's important to keep in mind that each country has its unique requirements for psychology practice and admission to post-academic programs. While a master's degree in psychology from EUR may provide you with a strong foundation, there is no guarantee that this master's degree is aligned with foreign requirements.
Interested in practicing Psychology within the Netherlands?
In early 2022, the Netherlands introduced the "Zorg Prestatie Model" (ZPM), which outlines essential criteria and conditions for individuals aiming to work within the Dutch Mental Health or Forensic Care sector. To be eligible for reimbursement within the healthcare system, practitioners must meet the ZPM criteria. Failing to meet these requirements means you cannot operate within the ZPM framework, and any care provided will not be eligible for reimbursement by healthcare providers. For anyone aspiring to work in the Dutch Mental Health Care sector, it is crucial to meet the qualifications outlined by ZPM.
