It is a complete Master which aims at counteracting the growing marginalisation of architecture in art history studies. At the same time, the study of the history of art and architecture in different eras (medieval, modern and contemporary) is complemented by in-depth studies on the theory and criticism of architecture, artistic literature, the history and practice of restoration (with moments of practice in the field), museology and digital humanities with an eye towards other artistic and cultural expressions like photography, cinema, theatre, and literature. While a research degree should be very rewarding personally, it is also a serious and sometimes intense undertaking. Under the current system, a full-time doctoral student has three years to complete a full draft of her or his thesis and then a further one year for writing up (known as a 3+1 degree). Research degrees are generally undertaken by individuals who aim to become professionals in the field of art history and/or archaeology, whether as academics who carry out research and teach in universities or as curators or educators in museums, libraries or archives, or in any number of other related areas such as academic publishing or even the commercial art world. It is generally a good idea to have some experience of work outside university before applying to a doctoral programme, for example, in some role in a museum or gallery.

With two distinctive but interrelated pathways MA Fashion Cultures is a theoretically based course that explores fashion and dress within its historical, social and cultural contexts. On the History and Culture pathway you will investigate fashion as object, representation and practice through an interdisciplinary approach from both historical and contemporary perspectives. On Fashion/Film you will investigate the on-going changing relationship between fashion, costume and forms of film as well as the relationship between cinema and consumption within a global context. The Fashion/Film unit offers students from a fashion background the opportunity to learn more about the history of cinema and the critical theories deployed within film studies. Students whose first degree is in cinema or media studies will be provided with the chance to learn about the history of fashion, its emergence as an academic discipline and the different theoretical approaches now utilised within the field. Students who wish to make films when appropriate to the unit will be supported with the necessary skills and facilities. LCF provides workshops, lectures and seminars on filmmaking that will support students wishing to undertake this opportunity. Studio space and technician support is also available to support film making. This is offered to students with existing experience and to those new to this field. While you will choose one pathway, you will have the opportunity to attend the lectures for the other pathway if you wish to, so you can gain the fullest possible understanding of a variety of disciplines and their impact upon visual and material cultures. You will enrol onto your chosen pathway as decided at your interview and will exit with the appropriate pathway award.
