Introduction
Electrical energy is now more than ever the answer to the world's urgent energy challenges. Electrical energy is the crucial driver of efficiency and success in the energy transition towards a sustainable, truly industrial, and consumer-oriented economy.
Electrical engineering is the largest and most diverse technological field in the world. Studies in the Master's Programme in Electrical Engineering are wide-ranging and relevant to the industry. You may choose to specialize in the conversion, use, and control of electric systems or the electricity market and solar economy.
You will acquire extensive knowledge of how the industry works, and the engineering skills and technological knowledge needed to design, assess and improve electrical systems. You will also develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities that will facilitate intellectual, creative, responsive, and professional growth and lifelong learning for continuous improvement.
EUR-ACE® and ASIIN are quality labels for engineering degree programs at the Bachelor and Master level. The program was accredited in 2011 for the first time and the re-accreditation took place in 2017.
Admissions
Curriculum
The Master's program in Electrical Engineering is a two-year program. It leads to the degree of Master of Science in Technology, M.Sc. (Tech.), which is 120 ECTS credits.
The program includes core, advanced specialization, minor and elective studies as well as a Master's thesis. Read more in the study guide.
Core studies, 29 ECTS credits
Include studies in mathematics, energy efficiency, and technology and society, as well as laboratory assignments.
Advanced specialization studies, min. 40 ECTS credits
Select one of the following:
- Solar Economy
- Control and Automation
- Control and Communication
- Electromechanics
- Power Electronics Design
- Electrical Drives
Minor studies, 20 ECTS credits
For students who have selected an advanced specialization in Solar Economy, minor studies, min. 20 ECTS credits, can be selected freely from the minor subjects provided by LUT, but bio-energy technology or environmental responsibility are recommended. Students may also complete their minor studies at another university in Finland or abroad. For any other advanced specialization field, minor studies are not compulsory.
Elective studies
Can be chosen from any discipline at LUT to complement your studies.
Master's thesis, 30 ECTS credits
An advanced research project during the program's fourth semester. The Master's thesis is a part of the advanced specialization studies and requires approximately six months of full-time work.
Program Outcome
This Master's program provides a holistic view of modern electric and power systems and their technological development.
After completing the Master's program, you will have acquired a comprehensive knowledge of electrical engineering.
As a graduate, you will be able to work independently and scientifically, acquire information and formulate solutions to complex problems and tasks.
You will acquire:
- professional skills in applying the essential theories of electrical engineering to practical electrotechnical applications; you can complement your degree with environmental or bioenergy-related studies as well as business studies;
- knowledge of the ethical aspects of the field and its effects on society; you will be capable of critically assessing the future prospects of the field of electrical engineering;
- teamwork skills; you will learn to work as a member of a team and be able to organize, carry out and lead projects.
The degree program also prepares you for scientific doctoral studies.
Scholarships and Funding
Early Bird discount / First academic year
When required to pay a tuition fee, you are offered
- an Early Bird Discount of EUR 6 000
for the first academic year if confirming your place and paying the rest of the tuition fee of EUR 7 500 within 21 days from the date of having received your Certificate of Admission.
Early Bird discount is available in both Regular Admission and Early Admission.
Finland Scholarship / First academic year
When required to pay a tuition fee, you can apply for a Finland Scholarship of
Full cover for a tuition fee + EUR 5 000 for the living costs for the first academic year
The scholarship can be applied for on your application form when applying to the programme.
Finland Scholarship is available only in Regular Admission.
In Regular Admission, there is
- one Finland Scholarship awarded in each programme
Exception: No Finland Scholarship in the Master's Programme in Biorefineries.
The scholarship will be awarded in the order of the highest points received in the evaluation process within the programme among the ones being eligible for the scholarships and having applied for it.
No preliminary statements about anybody's possibility for being awarded a Finland Scholarship or not as it all depends on the other applicants as well.
LUT Scholarship / Second academic year
When required to pay a tuition fee, you are offered
- LUT Scholarship of EUR 6 000
for the second academic year if having completed a minimum of 60 ECTS credits of studies included in the personal study plan during the first academic year.
With LUT Scholarship the tuition fee is EUR 7 500 for the second academic year.
The required ECTS credits will be automatically checked for and they must be included on your Transcript of Records by the end of the first academic year i.e. by 31 July.

Career Opportunities
Developing energy systems, energy-efficient technology, smart grids, electrifying transportation, and electricity markets employ Master's level graduates in electrical engineering now and will continue to do so in the future.
New experts are needed for product development, sales, marketing, and management. Your duties may include e.g. the design and production of electric devices, product development, technical sales, or production management.
The need for engineers in electricity retail is also growing. Moreover, power plants are undergoing changes as private solar and wind power plants are increasing. In other words, graduates in electrical engineering have ample job opportunities in industry and the public sector.
LUT's electrical engineering training has been the launching pad for a number of important actors and growing companies in the field, some of which are based in Lappeenranta. Job opportunities are available in large international corporations as well as small and medium-sized companies in the field.
You will also have a firm basis for scientific doctoral studies in the field of your specialization studies.
