Master of Arts in Church History

This is a two-year program aimed at helping students to Outline the history of Christianity up to 1500 AD. Interpret the history of the church since 1500 AD and discuss its implications for Christian life and ministry today. Describe the key developments in African Christian history and show how this history has shaped the African Christian context in which he or she will live and work. Exhibit a deeper understanding of the growth, maturation, and characteristics of the earliest African Christian communities in Egypt, North Africa, Nubia, and Ethiopia. Explain the interplay between theology and spirituality down through history; among others.

It costs Kshs.75,000 ($750) tuition per semester.

Intakes are in August/September, December/January and April/May of every year.

Delivery modes are:

1. Full-time
2. Holiday (i.e. three weeks every April, August, and December).

The requirement is undergraduate degree with at least 1st class/2nd class Honours (upper division) or lower division with 2 years working/ministry experience).

At the end of the study in the Master of Arts in Church History program, the student should be able to:

1. Outline the history of Christianity up to 1500 AD.
2. Interpret the history of the church since 1500 AD and discuss its implications for Christian life and ministry today.
3. Describe the key developments in African Christian history and show how this history has shaped the African Christian context in which he or she will live and work.
4. Exhibit a deeper understanding of the growth, maturation, and characteristics of the earliest African Christian communities in Egypt, North Africa, Nubia, and Ethiopia.
5. Explain the interplay between theology and spirituality down through history.
6. Use church history in making better decisions in the local church setting.
7. Critically read African church history and appreciate the subjective factors that shape the historian’s approach to history.
8. Construct a Christian perspective on history.
9. Evaluate church and state issues in 20th century Africa as an aid for constructing a Christian view of political life in Africa.
10. Relate insights gained in historical studies to the other subjects in the theological curriculum.

Admission Requirements

1. An undergraduate degree in any area of specialization from an accredited institution of higher learning with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale, or a degree awarded with first-class or upper second class honors, or its equivalent.
2. Applicants with 2.75 cumulative grade point average or higher or second-class lower division or its equivalent should have at least two years of relevant experience after graduation.
3. An applicant who does not meet the above requirements must present an undergraduate degree in any area of specialization and a Postgraduate Diploma in the relevant area of study from an accredited institution of higher learning with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale, or its equivalent.
