Introduction
The Master of Science in Applied Nanotechnology is unique in the Netherlands. The most distinguishing feature is its focus on the development of innovative micro- and nanotechnology-based products and applications. The fusion of elements from biology, chemistry, electrical engineering, and physics results in nanotechnological materials and devices with unprecedented properties. The program only starts in September and is taught entirely in English.

In addition to theory, our program is based on hands-on practice on various (production) techniques.

No Pre-master Required
With a suitable Bachelor’s degree you can start directly with this Master's; there is no need for a pre-master.

Curriculum
The master’s program has a two-year standard duration, and English is the operational language. The program provides a thorough basis in practical experience supported by appropriate theory. During the 2nd year, you'll be working on your master’s thesis project at a company. Upon graduation, you are entitled to use the title of Master of Science (MSc)
The First Year:
Theory, Practice, And A Project
The first semester of the year is mainly taken up by courses cementing the fundament of your (nanotechnological) knowledge. Subjects include mathematics, physical chemistry, and micro-/nano-engineering. In the third quarter, you are assigned an individual project on which you will work until the end of the first year.
Nanotechnology In Twente
Twente is the ultimate nanotechnology hotspot in the Netherlands. The region boasts impressive facilities and know-how in this specific subject, including, but not limited to, research groups at both Saxion and the University of Twente. Both MESA+ and MIRA are recognized throughout the world as leading institutions with state-of-the-art facilities. Furthermore, the area offers excellent job opportunities within the field of micro- and nanotechnology.

- E-nose
Designing an electronic nose that can detect specific molecules selectively at extremely low concentrations. This sensor can subsequently be applied for instance in health care or the detection of illegal explosives. - Sustainable and Circular Electronics
Lifetime Extension Technologies; using micro/nano sensors to monitor the health of sensitive electronic components in real life. - Lab-on-a-chip
Designing a point-of-care test with which GPs can perform tests on patients needing a minimal amount of saliva.

A Career In Nanotechnology
As a graduate of the Applied Nanotechnology Master's program, you have the skills and knowledge to find employment in a range of technical positions within, but not limited to the micro- and nanotechnological domain. As a member of an R&D team of a start-up, a crossover, or a knowledge institution, typical tasks include developing new products, exploring and/or conquering new markets, or, designing new applications. If you aspire to a business-facing position, our Master’s program will give you the qualifications to fully utilize your technical know-how to market innovative applications and customize them to the customer's specifications and desires. Examples of typical professions for our graduates are:
Application Engineer
In this role, your main task is to develop specific applications for a product, for example, a sensor to detect fireworks at the entrance of football stadiums
Product Engineer
Your role is to convert a set of wishes of the customer into a new nanotechnological-based product. Subtasks may include building and testing prototypes and designing the production process.
Project Engineer
As a project engineer, you will be working on projects to deliver functional nano- / microtechnological products that meet the requirements set by both the market and modern-day society.
R&D Engineer
The main task for a research & development engineer is performing applied-research-based projects, eventually leading to a marketable and profitable product.
