The Executive Master in Management of International Organizations (EMMIO) is a part-time blended program that successfully prepares participants to tackle the biggest managerial challenges of modern international organizations, such as the United Nations, International NGOs, International Financial Institutions, and Intergovernmental, and Supranational Organizations.
Compacting an impressive workload and a fully-fledged executive master program into a nine-month educational path, EMMIO is compatible with full-time employment. Our blended formula allows you two main benefits: maximum flexibility to complete the on-distance course workload throughout the year and concentrated face-to-face course delivery in two sessions of two and half weeks each. Curriculum
An Engaging Journey in International Organizations Management
The EMMIO is built on the expertise of SDA Bocconi and, in particular, of the Public Management and Policy Department. Immersed in a truly international environment, and with an effective working method combining face-to-face lectures and distance learning sessions, you will have the unique opportunity to experience hands-on training in a highly interactive environment, where you’ll be able to develop your managerial competencies, nurture your leadership skills, and prepare for your future professional challenges.
Structure
- Two face-to-face modules for a total of 25 full in-class days, alternating lectures given by SDA Bocconi professors, talks from senior practitioners, and interactive workshops, including simulations and role-playing games, case study discussions, and group work.
- Two blocks, of courses in distance learning, delivered via webinars in a virtual classroom environment and online forums will allow you to complete assignments, receive expert feedback, and actively engage with the other participants.
- Executive Coaching to serve individual development goals via one-to-one sessions with certified coaches
- Capstone Project aimed at giving continuity to learning with structured follow-up opportunities to discuss the concrete application of the content discussed in class within the daily working environment.
Term I - Face to Face in Milan - Core Modules: Envisioning and Innovating
In the first part of the program, you will have the opportunity to consolidate a series of soft skills to “see beyond” and move successfully in your organizational environment.
Terms II & III - Distance Learning: Managing and Leading
In this part of the program, you will devote yourself to specific management tools. The SDA Bocconi distance learning formula provides learning objects that are always available online, on a specific platform, and all devices.
Term IV - Face to Face in Milan - Core Modules: Managing Resources and Operations
In the final part of the program, you will be able to develop the most specific skills for the operational and strategic management of an international organization.
Learning Model
EMMIO combines a hands-on approach with a solid theoretical component, anchored around management frameworks and tools tailored to the operational and institutional specificities of international organizations.
Different and complementary learning methodologies will be adopted, to generate the participants’ highest active learning involvement.
Lectures in class will introduce key concepts, methodologies, and techniques. Case studies and business case discussions, exercises, simulations, and role-playing will be at the core of the teaching and learning methodologies of all class activities.
The learning experience is built upon a process including three phases: learn the target knowledge, experiment with it, and apply it to the company context.
Active learning is supported by a comprehensive executive coaching component that runs throughout the EMMIO program.
An all-round view of International Organizations
EMMIO merges practice and theory, using management frameworks and tools that are fully tailored to the operational and institutional specificities of international organizations.
The EMMIO learning path revolves around three main blocks of modules:
- Envisaging and innovating: modules in this section scrutinize the complex and dynamic environment within which international organizations operate; explore the main frameworks and tools for strategic thinking and planning; tackle the building blocks of organizational design, institutional governance, and change management and foster participants’ ability to drive and assess successful and sustainable innovation;
- Managing resources and operations: modules in this section take participants through the core management functional subjects, ranging from budgeting and financial management to risk management, from resource mobilization and branding to business process improvement and operations;
- Managing and Leading: modules in this section enable participants to effectively perform in multicultural environments typical of large, decentralized international organizations. Contents also focus on managing ethically, result-based management, public procurement, and impact investing.

Scholarships and Funding
Each year, SDA Bocconi offers several scholarships and tuition waivers. Tuition waivers and scholarships are awarded based on merit to candidates with an outstanding profile or other specific requirements. Admission to the program is independent of the awarding of any scholarship or tuition waiver.
You can apply for the scholarship/tuition waivers even though your selection process is still in progress. If you meet more than one requirement, you can apply to multiple scholarships/tuition waivers.

In particular, it offers one-to-one executive coaching, which aims to help you step into your current or future leadership roles and is designed to serve individual development goals.
