Introduction
Future livestock models must be based on sustainability, within the framework of competitive production systems that are respectful of animal welfare. Animal genetic improvement not only contributes to the sustainability of productions and increases their profitability, but also allows, through new technologies, to improve their efficiency and adapt them to the divergent demand of consumers. Thus, population and quantitative genetics, molecular genetics and reproductive biotechnology are currently basic subjects in livestock development.
Population genetics has been responsible for the main advances in animal breeds and populations used in production, and more recently developed molecular genetics is increasingly contributing to improvement. Finally, reproductive biotechnology offers tools that enhance and facilitate the application of both quantitative and molecular breeding methods.
The program provides solid training in these essential basic subjects on which animal genetic improvement is based and allows to gain experience through the critical review of current breeding and reproductive biotechnology programs carried out in different species, discussions with professionals in the sector and visits techniques to public and private institutions involved in improvement programs.
