The full-time degree programme covers two academic years. Classes are in the evenings of working days from 6.15pm till 9.30pm.
Curriculum
The programme consists of three sub-programmes, which students choose before starting their studies:
Germanic Studies
The sub-program prepares academically qualified specialists in Germanic studies and provides education that allows to focus on scientific research in the field of cultural heritage and current issues in Germanic studies in the Baltic region. The sub-programme highlights various aspects of Germanic studies in the general context of the humanities, but from an intercultural perspective - the Baltics - Germany - Scandinavia - special attention is paid to the study of historical and current links important to the Baltics. Within the programme, students will study common study courses and specialization courses of the chosen sub-programme such as Regional and transnational aspects of the German cultural environment, Paradigms of cultural science in Germanic studies, Media, communication and cultural media processes in German studies, Development trends of modern literary theory, Word in diachronic and history of lexicography, Language and regionality, Contacts and contrasts of Nordic languages and cultures, Intercultural communication in economics and translational aspects of applied texts, Translation of literary texts, etc.
Romance studies
"Romance studies" is the unique graduate program in Latvia providing academic education at the Master's level in the Romance languages. Specialized courses of the program are offered in French, Spanish or Italian, and focus on linguistic and cultural studies, language teaching, translation, and international relations. Program’s students can choose one of Romance languages for their specialization or combine two languages, for example French and Spanish. The program is based on multi-lingual and multi-disciplinary approach. We provide knowledge about communication models and strategies, about the multifaceted interaction of cultures and languages about the regional specificity and diversity of literature and art. Our program employs the best experts of Latvia in the fields of the Romance Languages, Romance Culture and History, Language Teaching and Translation, as well as visiting professors from French, Spanish and Italian universities. The Program engages English and Latvian language professionals in teaching translation and cultural studies. This helps to provide the students with a greater degree of specialization and competitiveness in the local and foreign labor markets, as well as necessary skills to carry out research in general and applied linguistics, literature, cultural studies and translation.
Russian and Slavic Studies
The sub-programme prepares highly qualified, competitive specialists in the field of Russian and Slavic linguistics and literary studies. The sub-programme focuses on regional and intercultural studies, special attention is paid to the functioning of the Russian language and literature in a broad socio-cultural context, the description of Slavic languages and literature at the theoretical level, as well as the interaction of Slavic language and literature with Latvian language, literature and culture. Within the programme, students will study common study courses and specialization courses of the chosen sub-programme such as Contemporary Russian literature and culture, XX-XXI century current problems of the theory and history of Russian literature, Problems of modern Slavic folklore, Literature in Slavic countries and postcolonial studies, Russian language in theoretical and business aspect, History and theory of Russian and Latvian language contacts, Theoretical grammar of modern Slavic languages, Ethnopsycholinguistics and political linguistics of Russian and Slavic languages, Russian and Slavic literature in the Baltic region, Slavic literature in translations, Russian culture in the Baltic region at the beginning of the 20th - 21st century, Ethnocultural stereotypes in Slavic languages, literature and folklore, etc.
