Landscape patterns and land use change are important components for understanding ecological processes affecting biodiversity and ecosystem functions and services. As most political and economic drivers are expressed through human activities, having a landscape focus has recently been recognized as important to address many of our current environmental goals. Our education program builds on our research strengths in applied historical ecology, landscape analysis, and resource management, linking community ecology with restoration and management of both terrestrial and marine environments.

Landscape Architecture is a discipline that focuses on intervention in the landscape through the activities of planning, design, and management. It also focuses on the science that underpins these activities and the implementation of proposals. It is united around the concept of landscape, which is defined in various ways but is generally understood to mean outdoor spaces, environments, and places and relationships between people and these spaces, environments, and places, both in terms of activities and perceptions. Landscape Architecture is concerned with landscapes of all types, both urban and rural, and at all scales from the smallest open space to the region.

The Master of Science in Synthetic Landscapes is a one-year, three-semester program focused on advancing knowledge and developing expertise in the design of complex landscapes for the twenty-first century.

The program in "Landscape Architecture - Land Landscape Heritage" integrates technical, natural and agronomical sciences, as well as historical, cultural and social studies. The program is based on design studios and lectures on current themes such as the design of soil and of public open spaces, of the urban and rural landscape, preservation of landscape heritage, regeneration of derelict areas, sustainable tourism and hydrogeological risk prevention.
