Erasmus School of Economics - Erasmus University Rotterdam

Introduction

All faculty members are involved in both research and teaching. This allows the school to thrive. With five undergraduate programs and 18 graduate programmes offered, Erasmus School of Economics strives to become the best in its disciplines (economics, business economics and econometrics) and seeks to achieve excellence both in its research and teaching. This can be measured by its performance in rankings.

Erasmus School of Economics strategically has a clear focus on economics. Just as they were 100 years ago, as the school was established in 1913, the economists are the pounding heart of Erasmus University Rotterdam. The best Erasmus graduates have made outstanding contributions to science, government and business.

Erasmus School of Economics is an internationally renowned institute that contributes scientific knowledge to future economic issues and aims to answer currently relevant issues of concern to government and firms. The focus of the school is on the creation, the dissemination and the application of scientific knowledge, all from an economic perspective. Erasmus School of Economics relies on the most recent insights in the discipline. It collaborates with international scientific partners, and it has local footings in business issues relevant to the unique position that the city of Rotterdam has as a hub of transport and industry.

Campus Facilities:

The hub of Erasmus School of Economics is our Woudestein campus, a convenient 15-minute bike ride from Rotterdam’s city centre, including the sleek new Rotterdam Centraal train station. Outside of class time, students study in the light-filled new Polak building or at our state-of-the-art university library, grab a coffee at the Erasmus Food Plaza, or attend an event at the theatre or Café in de Smitse. The on-campus sports centre offers fitness, dance, spinning, squash, and tennis among many other classes. In short, enough to do on the campus that is bustling with student life.

Careers:

Many companies in the Netherlands and abroad are interested to recruit economists with specific, but also with broad knowledge which they can apply in all sorts of real-life situations. The specific knowledge but wide applicability of economics is what makes graduates in economics very popular in many business and government sectors.

Our students go on to pursue a wide array of careers. Our economic and econometric graduates do not encounter any problems in finding employment. Most of the recent graduates are able to find jobs within three months after graduation. The basis for future work lies in the choice of subjects chosen during your study. However, no matter what you choose, Rotterdam economists are broadly employable. Not only do they work in specific economic jobs, they also find work in more general positions at academic levels. Several examples of positions include stock-exchange analysts, investment manager/analyst, entrepreneurs, financial advisors, marketing managers, tax inspectors, sales managers, policy staff, personnel managers, lecturers, academics, politicians, management consultants and scientific journalists. Although the afore-mentioned list includes multiplicity of positions and sectors, our economists can be found primarily in the following sectors:

  1. banking
  2. accountancy, administrative offices, tax advisors
  3. consultancy
  4. general public administration
  5. economic research / consultancy firms
  6. trade (particularly wholesale companies) and multinationals
  7. entrepreneurship
