The Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Biotechnology (FBBB) is one of the youngest and most dynamically expanding units of the Jagiellonian University. It is also a leading scientific and educational institution in Poland, recognized all over the world in the field of modern biology. The FBBB was established in 2002, following the expansion of the Jan Zurzycki Institute of Molecular Biology which had been growing since the 1970s. Nowadays, the faculty comprises 17 departments and employs 150 scientists.
The FBBB offers programmes leading to Bachelor's, Master and PhD degrees in the field of biotechnology, biophysics, biochemistry and bioinformatics. International students are welcome to attend a two-year Master's programme in English.
The FBBB's building is located on the III JU Campus. In the close vicinity of the FBBB, there are other JU faculties of life sciences, as well as Jagiellonian Centre for Experimental Therapeutics, Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology and the newly-opened National Synchrotron Radiation Centre SOLARIS.
Thanks to successful research and structural grant applications the FBBB scientists have an easy access to the state-of-the-art equipment and modern technologies, which let them focus on the problems most pertinent to modern society.
The Jagiellonian University, often shortened to JU (historical names include: Studium Generale, University of Kraków, Kraków Academy, The Main Crown School, and Main School of Kraków) was established in 1364 by the Polish king Kazimierz the Great. It is the oldest university in Poland, the second oldest university in Central Europe and one of the oldest universities in the world.
The Jagiellonian University comprises 16 faculties offering about hundred degrees and specialities in Polish, as well as over a dozen in English. Approximately 50,000 students enrol in Bachelor, Master, PhD and no-degree study courses every year. The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) has been implemented in all courses and specialities, enabling trouble-free linking of studies at JU with studies in other European countries. Together with the development of co-operation with a number of universities worldwide, this has enabled a great increase in student mobility.
