Umeå University was founded in 1965 and is Sweden's fifth oldest university. Today, we have a strong international and multicultural presence with students, teachers and researchers from all over the world. As one of the leading comprehensive universities in the nation, we are alive with enthusiasm, creativity and fresh ideas.
We constantly strive towards being one of Scandinavia and Europe's best environments for education, research and community engagement that meets the challenges of an ever-increasing global society.
Umeå University's Campus Umeå is the main campus and is patterned after the American Campus model. Consequently, almost all of the courses and programmes that are taught in English take place on Campus Umeå or at the adjacent University Hospital.
There are actually two campuses in Umeå, the largest city in northern Sweden. Campus Umeå is the main campus and focal centre of Umeå University, and the vast majority of the courses and programmes are held in its many buildings and facilities. The University Library with its 1.2 million volumes and Universum, the campus' hub, with its pubs, cafés, restaurants, bookstore, student study rooms and so on are also situated on Campus Umeå
Umeå Arts Campus
Umeå Arts Campus (konstnärligt campus) - currently in development - is situated on the east side of town by the scenic banks of the Umeå River and is within a short walking distance of Campus Umeå. It hosts the Umeå Institute of Design, Umeå Academy of Fine Arts and new Umeå School of Architecture. HUMlab-X also has been given a place at this new "artistic campus," along with Bildmuseet, Umeå University's museum of contemporary art and visual culture.
Campus Skellefteå and Campus Örnskoldvik
Our campuses in the Skellefteå and Örnsköldvik mainly offer programmes and courses with regional ties, both full-time and part-time courses at a slower study tempo. The educational programs are developed and designed according to an inventory of needs with the local or regional connection.
Other Study Locations
Umeå University also has a presence in many other towns and municipalities in northern Sweden, including Lyksele and Kiruna. In addition, thousands of people who are enrolled in our wide selection of distance education courses and programmes have the flexibility of primarily studying in their home environments.
